11th February 2009 - The Future of FunOrb
Hello, orbsters.
FunOrb is rapidly closing in on its first birthday, and we’d like to give you an insight into some strategic thoughts we have for the future of the service.
We want to make sure that you stop thinking of FunOrb’s releases as “minigames” and start thinking of them as “blockbuster games in a browser”.
Our focus is going to be on delivering games that provide you with long term, in-depth, high quality gameplay (think Arcanists or Armies Of Gielinor, in terms of scale) along with significant expansion packs to our existing titles, like Zombie Dawn: The UK Levels, which will be out within the next few months.
In summary:
- We think that quality is far, far more important than quantity. We want to make sure our games are as awesome as we can make them before they get released.
- This focus on larger, more engaging games, means that we won’t be guaranteeing a release every two weeks.
- Some of the existing single-player games will be updated with expansion packs for members.
- Most of the current single-player games will be made completely free of charge.
- We will be updating our most popular multiplayer games on a more regular basis.
- We will be updating the entire FunOrb Site with a new look and feel, and introducing the promised upgrade to the Achievement system.
Basically, we think that FunOrb is a great site, with great games and a great community. We want to expand on the successes of our first year and get even more people to discover the service. The best way to do this is to produce the very best possible games and content. To quote Jagex CEO, Mod MMG: “If it ain’t awesome, don’t build it!”
We also want to know what you think and, where we can, we’ll explain a little more about what goes into making a FunOrb game. As such, we will be releasing some developer diaries for a few of our up-and-coming games. Most importantly, we want to hear your views on FunOrb, so we will be holding a live developer Q&A on the forums in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, if you have any questions for the FunOrb team, please post them on the thread for this news post in the Announcements forum and we’ll put up our answers on the site next week.
If you’re a free player, you won’t be able to post on the forums, but you can email us at funorbquestions@jagex.com. This email address will work for the next week, so you’ve got plenty of time to get your questions and comments in.
As you can see, there are lots of ongoing developments here at FunOrb, so have fun and we’ll see you in game.
