FunOrb World Forums _ News, Announcements & Guidelines _ Bachelor Fridge Q&a And Concept Art!

Posted by: Dan Hart Sep 24 2009, 07:00 PM

Jagex (Mod Korpz in particular) have been kind enough to answer some questions about their upcoming release: Bachelor Fridge. They've also given us a sneek peak at some exclusive concept art!

QUOTE
Q: We've heard the game has no relevance to fridges - true?
A: Untrue. This game is set inside a fridge.

Q: We think that the game may be a first person game based on exploring a Bachelor Fridge, are we barking up the wrong tree?
A: Yes, there is no first person perspective in the game. Essentially the player manages the Fridge and the denizens there of.

Q: So, single or multi-player?
A: Both in different parts of the game.

Q: Is there any potential for a multi/single player version of the game? (delete as appropriate)
A: See above , so no not really.

Q: We know Jagex applied for a trademark on the 30th of June 2009 for the name Bachelor Fridge, is this standard practice when creating a new game?
A: Yes, we intend all of our games to be capable of standing alone as a viable product in thier own right. Therefore we need to have the domain name registered to ourselves. Getting a name where the domain is free is often the hardest part about naming a game.

Q: Ren from MechScape World has done some detective work, and discovered that Jagex were in the process of designing the game in October 2008 (http://forum-fo.funorb.com/forums.ws?7,8,383,14731,goto,1), when did you actually start making the game itself?
A: We started the current design and build in January 2009. But the design went through a couple of iterations before this point. We did some code work on the previous designs before this and that had to be dropped as the game we’d originally planned simply wasn’t fun. We are far happier with this current version.

Q: What's in your fridge?
A: Well I’m married and my wife and I keep our fridge very clean. A better question is “What was in your fridge when you were a bachelor?”, and the answer includes things like the cucumber I bought last summer for cucumber sandwhichs which for some reason I thought were a good idea, which is now a pool of green slime at the bottom of the veg tray with “things” moving in it. The Half eaten curry which I keep thinking might make a good late night snack that now seems to be feeding off the lettuce, the bacon that time forgot, the yogurt that seems to be growing its own forest. That sort of thing.

Q: Is the game primarily F2P?
A: To be decided but I’d like to answer “no”. F2P will certainly be able to play multiplayer and have some great fun but the primary focus of the game will hopefully be on the members.

Q: What extra features do members receive?
A: Again to be decided I’m afraid.

Q: Are there any further features/expansions members can expect?
A: Perhaps but that will depend on the popularity of the game.

Q: Can we expect set missions or is the game map-based?
A: Hehe, neither. Okay here is the skinny. The game involves you breeding creatures in your fridge that you then put into multiplayer combat in the “arena” against other players. Arena combat uses a “simultaneous plotted turns” mechanic, so outwitting your opponent and anticipating their moves is as much a part of the game as having the right creatures.

Q: Will Bachelor Fridge have it's own website in the future like Arcanists?
A: Yes.

Q: We can tell from the developer diary that the game will involve some elements of combat: How much of the game involves combat?
A: Quite a lot as I’ve just described above. All creatures will have multiple moves they can take into combat.

Q: Initial reactions from the diary suggested that the game might have some similarities to Zombie Dawn - is there any truth in this?
A: Nope.

Q: So the game actually involves fighting mouldy food?
A: Nope, it involves fighting with creatures that have evolved from mouldy food.

Q: It appears that there were some issues with file size: What is the maximum size for a FunOrb game?
A: We have a maximum file size of 10meg for a game if we utilise heavy streaming in the game structure. We really do games on a shoe string compared to just about anyone else.

Q: A potato wearing a cap? An angry chilli? A confused sandwich? Where do you get these ideas from?
A: We thought of a food, and then tried to find something funny about the creature that it might spawn. Simple really, but it can take a lot of time.

Q: What was the inspiration for the game? Are any of the staff's fridges like this?
A: The idea for this game has been rolling around my head ever since my first week here at Jagex, when I opened the Fridge in the company canteen and I swear to this day, something moved at the back of the it. That was the basis for the initial concept.

Q: How long do you think we'll have to wait before the release of the game?
A: A lot of work has gone into this title and its coming together nicely. It’s still some way from finished though. I suspect that we will have this game ready before December, but at the same time it would not surprise me if we didn’t. Timescales are always, always the things that keep me awake at night. I know that as a player base, you chaps want more content, but I also know that if we deliver lots of poor content we will be doing ourselves more damage than if we deliver nothing at all.

So, we can conclude from this Q&A that the game does involve a fridge, in which you grow mouldy food and creatures evolve from the food - you then fight against other players with your creatures, it is nothing like Zombie Dawn, it will be a stand-alone at some point, and before Mod Korpz was married his fridge was filled with living things.

Without further wait; I will reveal the concept art which Jagex have supplied us! Take a look!
