Pirate Empires: Diary 2

Hi, Orbsters! Just to let you know that the loose cannons of the Pirate Empires team have put together a new developer diary for your piratey pleasure. The game’s obviously still experimental, so mind out for stray gunpowder and read at your own risk. Garrr!

19th March 2009 – Miner Disturbance: Super Volcano

First off, we’ve made the original volcano – Mount Magros – entirely free. Everyone can now fill their pockets with diamonds!

Second, although we’d heard of the Super Volcano before, we’ve not yet dared to explore it. Never afraid of a challenge, Moin the miner (son of Moin, son of Moin, son of Melbert) is determined to plunder it for all it’s worth, in this expansion to Miner Disturbance.

The new Super Volcano is available to members, and it’s got everything that the old volcano has, and much more. How about snow, ice and oil? How about monsters with three-foot teeth? How about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll?

To give Moin a better chance in the massive Super Volcano, we’ve been busy in our labs making Moin some great new equipment: the dangerously unstable ice bomb, the non-stick grease-proof suit, the jetpack, crampons and his granny’s trusty wooly jumper.

How about that? Super enough for you?

18th March 2009 – Forums For Everyone

One of the best things about FunOrb is its community, which is most evident on the official forums. Anyone can browse and read these forums, but we have now made it possible for free-players who have at least 42 Achievements to post there too!

Why the Achievements requirement? Well, we feel that anyone who has played enough FunOrb games to earn 42 Achievements has shown that they have a clear interest in the site and its games.

If you’re wondering why ‘42’ Achievements specifically, it’s because that’s the answer to the ‘ultimate question’!

12th March 2009 – Pirate Empires

We’re sure you will have noticed FunOrb’s new-look home page, but we’d also like to draw your attention to our new Developer Diaries feature, the first of which focuses on a game we’re developing called Pirate Empires.

The game’s development has been progressing well and, from this point on, we’ll be keeping you updated on its progress in this new section of the website. We’ll also be releasing Developer Diaries for other games (some of which you‘ll know about, some you won’t), giving you insight into the trials, tribulations and triumphs of working on FunOrb.

Some of you may have heard of this game on the forums, where it had become known as Pirate Lords. Due to domain name issues, we’ve had to change the name slightly, but, rest assured, it’s the same game.

FunOrb is currently undergoing huge changes, as well as the new homepage, free-users will soon have access to the forums! This will mean a larger community, and some great discussion on the FunOrb forums.

Happy Birthday FunOrb!

The 27th is a special day for FunOrb. Jagex’s second child is one year old!

To celebrate, FunOrb World is playing music all day in the radio from 9am to 12pm GMT.

Head over to the forums to post your birthday messages!

26th February 2009 – Armies of Gielinor – Update 1

Today, we’re releasing the first of several planned updates for Armies of Gielinor, including Team Games, more Achievements and updates to the interface.

Armies of Gielinor was a complex project for us and, while we think it’s already a great game, there’s always more that can be done, given more time. As well as adding new features, this update has given me a chance to rewrite older parts of the code, which has helped to increase the game’s quality.

The new features are:

  • Team Games – This was the main thing players have asked for since Armies of Gielinor was launch, so we’re glad to include 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 options with this release;
  • More Achievements – Many of the Achievements players suggested have been added, plus there are some for the new Team Games;
  • Interface updates – There have been some graphical tweaks, and also some fairly large additions to the game interface, such as the ability to see terrain statistics and enemy attack ranges.

I’m really proud of Armies of Gielinor and how everyone has responded to it on the forums. The forums are also a good place to look to get an idea of the other proposed updates, the second of which I’ve already started work on. Start saving up your runes – you’re going to need them…

Brick-À-Brac Review

Date of first draft: 12/9/2008

Dates of edits:
- 19/02/2009 Added to website.

Official Description

Brick-a-Brac is a classic bat-and-ball game in the FunOrb style. There are 30 single-player levels of various design, filled with a wealth of power-ups, moving bricks, switches and teleporters – the perfect place to start racking up some Highscores. Then there’s the multiplayer, consisting of hotseat multiplayer for 2 people, or up to 5-player Rated and Unrated games. The multiplayer game is a race against time (and your opponents) to destroy as many bricks as possible, while sending your rivals some nasty power-ups to put them off their own brick destroying.

First Impression

At a first glance, the game can look quite hard when a player sees so many bricks on front of them that need destroying, but actually, they’ll go down so quickly that the more a person gets, the more enjoyable the game will be for them! With so many game modes, the game looks quite enjoyable.

Gameplay

The game offers so much action and entertainment that it must be fun for nearly everyone, not just top players! As players are able to get rid of bricks through such variety of methods, it offers different ways of finding the game fun. There are such easy methods of destroying the bricks, making it so much fun! So much pressure can be put on you when the screen starts to flash when you’re in with a chance of loosing, but if you keep taking them bricks down at a fast speed, you’ll recover. The relief of being back in the game can add to your excitement.

Graphics

This game offers quite good graphics. It is presented well and the graphics are generally good for the game. There are no downsides for this part of the game.

Music

Favoritism of the music of this game varies. The music isn’t casual, but it’s jollier in a tune which could be considered kiddish. Nevertheless, it goes quite good with the game and the voices of the men are quite amusing.

Recommended Skills

The recommended skills for players to enjoy this game fully are to be able to make quick, fast reactions and to be able to make good estimations of where the ball in the game may land based on the speed that it is going at and where it has been.

When you’ve played the game for about 3-4 times and you’ve got used to it, you should find that you’re able to get the bricks down faster and discover some new tactics for you to get ahead.
